What is a web hosting company? A question that has been asked so many times. A web hosting company provides all sizes of businesses, and individuals, with all the services they need to publish and maintain a web site on the internet. A basic web hosting service would provide you with a domain name, space to store your web site (on a web server), and email facilities.

What is a domain name? This is a unique name that is registered to you. For example, our domain names is www.ajshost.co.uk & www.ajs.org.uk and no one else can use them while they are registered to us.

They are renewed every 2 years for a renewal fee.You would be looking to pay about £10 for 2 years. As long as a domain name is available you can register it.

These can be usually registered by a web hosting companies , or domain name registration companies.

What is a web server? These are computers permanently connected to the internet, generally via a very fast internet connection, beyond what any one has in there homes. One use of a web server is to host your web site.

What is an IP address? These are numbers such as 192.168.0.1 that are allocated to computers. It is similar to a phone number, or house number. The postman will know where to come to deliver you mail. Computers deliver each other information based on there IP address.

However you rarely put in the ip address of your favorite web site, because these numbers are hard to remember. Therefore Domain names are linked to the IP address.

What is a domain name server? ( DNS) These change the domain name we put into our web browser, e.g. Internet Explorer, into an IP address, which forwards us to the web server that hosts the web site.
